Dear Chris,
"Shoot straight you bastards and
don’t make a mess of it", Breaker
Morant before his execution in the namesake
movie.
We often get involved with projects by following
an unsuccessful effort. You know the familiar
tune; no documentation, wrong resources assigned
to tasks on a project that is now over budget and
had to be completed yesterday. These
projects usually have a ton of baggage starting at
the top with the project champion and cascade into
the current state of the initiative often resulting in
the whole thing being scrapped and people even
losing their jobs. In these situations we
can be looked upon as the bad guy or the saving
cavalry after a long battle. We find that
groups repeatedly make the mistake of locking
themselves into an unrealistic box. You can
start with certain proven methodologies but our
experience is that no matter well how applied it must
always adapt to the available technology and align
with an organization’s expectation.
After all, no two projects are ever the
same. Believing so will make the project miss
its mark and leave behind a mess.
(Fortunately, we enjoy being the cavalry! ;-)
Happy Nuking
